Painting for me is a research laboratory for studying how we see and interpret reality. I concentrate on the play of light on surfaces, around objects, in reflections and shadows. Using transparent paints makes for glowing colours and colour mixing on a palette of the primary colours – red, yellow and blue – produces a full range of nuances. Each nuance painted separately so they stand distinct from one another. In a successful painting, the light becomes colour and colour is light. What we see (all we ever see!) is light, an intense, multifaceted, unsubstantial basis for interpreting reality.
