Gail De Cordova

gail de cordova image

"Gail de Cordova works with paint and tissue. An Isabelle Allende of visual art, her images invoke ghosts, nostalgia and mysticism together with the very real power of the lands she has known, primarily Cornwall, Spain and France. Her work spans time - from a child to an adult's remembrance. Caught, released or transformed by memory, emotion, colour and form. A language of her own that speaks to us."

Suzanne Jasileck, Suisho Gallery, 1999

art directory Thursday's artist tip

When taking photographs of fast moving scenes, try not to close one eye when looking at the scene in front of you when you're looking at the scene through the cameras viewfinder. If you keep both eyes open, you can often anticipate and plan for movement and changes to the composition in front of you before they happen, by taking account of whats happening outside of the viewfinder frame. Remember, when working fast, the best images are often the ones you didn't anticipate. Act on instinct and embrace the accident!

art directory selected artist's statement

Madeliene started painting while living aboard her boat and traveling the islands and the east coast of the U.S.  Straight lines and realistic detail were near impossibilities while rocking on the boat so she fell in love with color.  Over the next few years she added an understanding of light and shape resulting in her loose, contemporary impressionistic style.

The subjects of her painting are varied. “I paint what I love: martinis, wine, a good cup of coffee, vintage cars and great jazz” Madeliene holds a law degree from the University of Florida and practiced in Orlando, FL for 20 years.  Presently she paints full time spending her summers in Provincetown, MA and her winters in Florida.
